Day Is Done [Thomas Imbach]

Aufnahmen aus dem Atelierfenster und die aufgezeichneten Nachrichten des Telefonbeantworters: Über zwanzig Jahre hinweg sammelte der Zürcher Filmemacher Thomas Imbach beides. Aus diesem audiovisuellen Archiv ist entstanden, eine Art Tagebuchfilm. Chronologisch reihen sich Gesehenes und Gehörtes aneinander. Der Vater erzählt aus den Ferien und gratuliert zum neuen Film, die Grossmutter gerät in Verlegenheit wegen des Piepstons, die junge Frau lädt zum Bad im See ein... Aus den Fragmenten entsteht eine Geschichte: die einer Zeitspanne im Leben einer Hauptfigur, die nur für Sekunden schemenhaft vor der Kamera auftaucht und die man sonst nie sieht oder hört. Es ist eine autobiographische Erzählung, deren Protagonist durch seinen Blick und sein Gehör anwesend ist, ansonsten aber passiv erscheint; er blickt aus dem Fenster, während Leute versuchen, ihn zu erreichen, ist gleichzeitig an- und abwesend. Zwischendurch verleihen ihm eingespielte Stücke aus Songs eine Stimme, sie drücken seine Befindlichkeit aus, bevor sie mit harten Schnitten abrupt wieder abbrechen: Stimmungen sind relativierbar, da zeit- und lebensabschnittsgebunden.
Wieviel Zeit zwischen den Aufnahmen liegt, erahnen wir nur. Es wechseln sich Schneegestöber, Sommergewitter, Herbstsonne ab, die Zeit vergeht, und grosse Dinge geschehen: Liebe, Tod, Geburt, Trennung. Immer stärker wird die Vergänglichkeit greifbar. Der Titel des Films ist einem Song von Nick Drake entnommen, der von der Melancholie des Vergehens handelt: «When the day is done, down to earth then sinks the sun, along with everything lost and won.» Nichts währt ewig, alles geht vorüber.
Was gleich bleibt: der Blick aus dem Fenster. Der Blickpunkt bietet eine Vielzahl von Details, die sich ihrerseits aber laufend verändern: Die Leuchtsignale auf der Hardbrücke erstrahlen, die Züge werden moderner, ein Hochhaus entsteht etagenweise. Day Is Done ist auch ein Landschaftsfilm, der die Entwicklung einer urbanen Topografie beobachtet, und eine Hommage an Zürichs Hardbrücke. Das Portrait des Mannes wandelt sich mit dem Portrait seiner Stadt, beide verändern sich im Lauf der Zeit. Ausserdem ist der Film eine Reverenz an den Telefonbeantworter. Im Zeitalter von SMS und Livechat, in dem die menschliche Stimme auf der Combox meist bloss noch kurze, knappe, funktionale Nachrichten hinterlässt, wirken die langen, persönlichen Botschaften auf dem Beantworter wie ein Anachronismus, dessen Intimität berührt.
Day Is Done wurde an den Berliner Filmfestspielen 2011 uraufgeführt.
