Sommer an einem Strand in der Toskana, Zelte im Pinienhain, die Grillen zirpen, die Luft flirrt vor Hitze. Die Ferienstimmung, die Regisseur Rolando Colla und Kameramann Lorenz Merz mit den ersten Bildern von Giochi d’estate evozieren, ist jedoch trügerisch. Denn unter der träge- entspannten Oberfläche der sommerlichen Idylle lauern Dissonanzen.
Der Teenager Nic, sein kleiner Bruder und sein Vater haben sich auf dem Campingplatz eingerichtet. Die Mutter kommt später dazu – die Stimmung zwischen den Eltern wirkt angespannt. Bald wird klar wieso: Der Vater tickt regelmässig ohne Grund aus und schlägt zu. Nic, noch zu jung und schwach um sich für seine Mutter zu wehren, aber alt genug, um Hass zu empfinden, hat sich einen regelrechten Gefühlspanzer zugelegt. Mit stets coolem, ablehnendem Blick geht er durch die Welt und behauptet nichts zu empfinden, keinen Schmerz, keine Freude. Für seinen Vater hat er nur Verachtung übrig, doch auch seine Mutter, die immer wieder zum Schläger zurückkehrt, ist kaum ein Vorbild. Am Strand begegnet Nic der hübschen Marie, die mit Schwester und Mutter ebenfalls in Italien im Urlaub ist. Auch sie fühlt sich allein gelassen von den Erwachsenen: Ihr sehnlichster Wunsch ist es, ihren unbekannten Vater kennenzulernen, doch ihre Mutter verweigert ihr jede Auskunft über dessen Verbleib.
Mit ihren kleineren Geschwistern und Lee, dem Sohn des Kioskbesitzer, spielen Nic und Marie – ausser Reichweite der Eltern – in einer verfallenen Hütte. Nic, der Älteste, hat hier das Sagen. Seine unterdrückten Aggressionen drohen die naiv-unbekümmerten Machtspiele immer wieder in blutigen Ernst kippen zu lassen. Gleichzeitig beginnt er Gefühle für Marie zu entwickeln, mit denen beide nicht recht umgehen können.
Rolando Colla, Schaffhauser Regisseur mit italienischen Wurzeln, erzählt in Giochi d’estate eine universelle Geschichte über das Erwachsenwerden. Er zeigt, wie Jugendliche ihr Leben selbst in die Hand nehmen und schlechte Erfahrungen hinter sich lassen können – Nic und Marie erleben ihre erste Liebe. Dem stellt er die Unfähigkeit der Erwachsenen gegenüber, sich aus eingetretenen Pfaden zu befreien.
Der Film will mehr als eine Geschichte erzählen, er will eine Atmosphäre und die Stimmungslage der Protagonisten fühlbar machen. Das gelingt über weite Stecken gut, doch manchmal drohen die durchwegs schönen Bilder – wie zufällig aufgenommen und doch sorgfältig komponiert – zu sehr ins Symbolhafte und Geschmäcklerische zu kippen, die bloss angedeuteten Stimmungen wirken dann plötzlich dick aufgetragen. Dabei genügt es den durchwegs talentierten (Jung)Schauspielern zuzusehen, um zu spüren, was die Figuren bewegt.
Giochi d’estate, der seine Weltpremiere im Wettbewerb des Filmfestivals von Venedig 2011 feierte, wurde als offizieller Teilnehmer der Schweiz für das Rennen um den «ausländischen Oscar» 2012 ausgewählt.
