Häftlinge in orangefarbener Kleidung und Fussfesseln, schwer bewaffnete Sicherheitsbeamte, Stacheldrahtzaun - mit diesen erschreckend vertrauten Bildern beginnt Thomas Selim Wallners Film The Guantanamo Trap. Solche Archivaufnahmen bilden den offensichtlichen Schrecken des Gefangenenlagers ab - der deutsch-kanadische Regisseur Wallner blickt mit seinem Film aber tiefer. Er zeigt das subtile, zermürbende Grauen der «Falle Guantanamo» anhand von drei Lebensgeschichten.
Murat Kurnaz war fünf Jahre lang als mutmasslicher Terrorist auf Guantanamo inhaftiert - bis heute liegen keine Beweise für seine Tat vor. Diane Beaver war Rechtsberaterin in Guantanamo Bay und erarbeitete im Auftrag ihrer Vorgesetzten Vorschläge für folterähnliche Verhörmethoden. Als pflichtbewusste Patriotin wollte sie alles in ihrer Macht stehende tun, um ihr Land vor den Gefahren des Terrors zu schützen. Als die Regierung unter öffentlichen Druck gerät, werden Einzelpersonen wie Beaver für die brutalen Verhörmethoden verantwortlich gemacht. Sie muss für die Regierung den Kopf hinhalten, verliert ihre Anstellung und wird öffentlich an den Pranger gestellt. Matt Diaz war Rechtsoffizier in Guantanamo. Er folgte seinem Gewissen, schmuggelte eine Namensliste aus dem Gefängnis und liess diese einer Menschenrechtsanwältin zukommen. Er wird verraten, verliert darauf seinen militärischen und rechtlichen Rang, sodass er nicht mehr arbeiten darf und keine Rente erhält.
Wallner erzählt die Geschichten der drei Protagonisten in einzelnen Fragmenten: Klassische, porträtartige Aufnahmen wechseln mit Alltagsbildern und Archivaufnahmen. Da ist Murat Kurnaz, der vor schwarzem Hintergrund direkt beleuchtet in die Kamera spricht. Die Haft in Guantanamo hat Spuren hinterlassen: der junge Mann scheint verbraucht, sein Gesichtsausdruck wirkt stumpf und sein Blick flimmert rastlos hin und her. Man sieht Diane Beaver, die beim Grillieren mit Freunden ihre Leistungen im Dienst für das Land feiert. Und Matt Diaz, der seiner Tochter die blaue Uniform mit Goldknöpfen zeigt, die er als «Verräter» nicht mehr tragen darf. Immer wieder tauchen auch Bilder aus den Medien auf: Die einstürzenden Twin Towers am 11. September 2001, die Aufnahmen der Misshandlungen im US-Lager in Abu Ghraib und Artikel der Bild-Zeitung über Murat Kurnaz, den «Taliban aus Bremen». Wallner verzichtet auf erklärende Kommentare und Hintergrundinformationen. Das mag vor allem zu Beginn des Films verwirren, nach und nach fügen sich die Einzelteile aber wie Mosaiksteine zu einem Ganzen zusammen. Verbindungen zwischen den drei Schicksalen werden sichtbar. Die Grenze zwischen Täter und Opfer verschwimmt. Diane Beaver wird von der Regierung fallengelassen und gerät so in die Rolle des Opfers. Sie, die pflichtbewusst ihre Aufgaben erfüllt hat, ohne diese zu hinterfragen, steht genauso alleine da wie Matt Diaz, der seinem Gewissen gefolgt ist.
The Guantanamo Trap gibt keine Antworten auf die Fragen nach Gut und Böse, nach Schuld und Verantwortung. Aber er zeigt, dass die Falle Guantanamo ohne Rücksicht auf Moral zuschnappt - und tiefe Spuren hinterlässt.
